Search Algorithm

« Back to Glossary Index

A Search Algorithm is a set of rules that search engines use as their primary goal in ranking a list in response to a search query.

A search algorithm is a complex system used to retrieve data from their search index and provide the best results for a query instantly. Search engines use a combination of algorithms and multiple ranking factors to rank web pages accordingly on their search engine results pages (SERPs).

Search engines regularly update their algorithms to provide users with as comprehensive and accurate results as possible, and these updates require constant quality testing of site content and overall SEO. Here’s a basic summary of some of the key algorithm updates – Google Penguin and Panda:
Panda update is a filter designed to punish "thin" or poorly rated content. Whereas Penguin is a filter designed to penalize websites that have bad link building techniques and keyword stuffing.
